The twelve apostles The Twelve Apostles A list of their names, who they were and where and how they died.
Peter or Simon Who was he: The brother of Andrew. A Galilean fisherman. When/How he died: Tradition says that when Nero was emperor of Rome, and he was arrested he said that he was not worthy to die his Lord's death, so he was crucified upside down.
Andrew Who was he: The brother of Peter. A Galilean fisherman. When/How he died: Tradition says that he was crucified on an X-shaped cross. That's the origin of the term, "St. Andrew's Cross". The first person he brought to the Lord Jesus was his brother Peter.
James Who was he: The older brother of John. When/How he died: The first of The Twelve that died as a martyr at Jerusalem by King Herod, according to Acts 12:2 "put to death with the sword."
John Who was he: The apostle whom Jesus loved. When/How he died: Tradition says that he was the only one of The Twelve that did not die a violent death. As a prisoner at the island of Patmos he wrote the Book of Revelation. He had to take care of Mary, the mother of Jesus according to John 19:26-27.
Philip Who was he: A fellow countryman of Peter and Andrew, from Bethsaida. When/How he died: Tradition says that he was crucified at Hierapolis, in Phrygia.
Bartholomew Who was he: When/How he died: Tradition says that he was crucified in India.
Thomas or Didymus Who was he: Nicknamed: "Doubting Thomas" because he wanted to touch and see Jesus Christ after His Resurrection. When/How he died: Tradition says the was killed with a spear in India.
Matthew Who was he: A tax-collector from Capernaum. When/How he died: Tradition says he was killed with a pike in Nadabah.
James Who was he: Known as James the Younger, writer of the epistle which bears his name. When/How he died: Tradition says he was stoned to death in Jerusalem.
Thaddaeus or Judas Who was he: The brother of James, reffered to as "Judas, not Iscariot." When/How he died: Tradition says he was crucified at Edessa.
Simon the Zealot Who was he: When/How he died: Tradition says he was crucified in today's Britain.
Judas Iscariot Who was he: The traitor When/How he died: He commited suicide by hanging himself on a tree.
The Bible does not record the end of all of the twelve apostles, nor their deaths but they are other references from tradition as to their martyrdom. Mathias who was elected, by the eleven, as a replacement for Judas Iscariot considered to be the 12th apostle, but many believe that the apostle Paul, whom Jesus Himself called, was the actuall replacement.
